
In a TikTok video, in which he filmed the ruins of his houses, Zainuddin Abdul Halim also said he and his eight family members suffered burns because of the extreme heat.
Recalling the incident, Zainuddin, 60, told Bernama he had just returned from breakfast with his friends at a nearby stall.
He said he was discussing his plans to return to his hometown in Rembau with his wife, when he heard a loud explosion.
“The entire house shook. It was as if a jet had come crashing down and it felt very hot.
“When we looked out the window, the sky was red and I screamed for everyone to run out and save themselves,” he was quoted as saying as he fought back tears when he rewatched his TikTok video.
Zainuddin also said that with the exception of his son, the rest of his family members have been discharged.
His son is waiting to undergo an operation after scalding the soles of his feet when fleeing barefooted.
“We really hope that the government can do something for us and the other victims,” he said.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said owners of homes which were destroyed would receive RM5,000, while those with homes partially damaged would receive RM2,500.
Zainuddin said the incident had forced them to cancel their pilgrimage. They were to fly as a family to Mecca next Wednesday.
The fire that broke out on the morning of April 1 engulfed a 500m section of a gas pipeline, injuring 111 people, many with burns and respiratory issues.
It destroyed 225 vehicles and damaged another 174. It also left a 10m-deep crater measuring 21m by 24m and damaged homes and properties within a 500m radius.
