British Airways suspended its flights to Kuala Lumpur in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Loke said the renewed connection with the UK – one of Malaysia’s key trade and tourism partners – will contribute to the growth of the aviation sector in Malaysia.
“The resumption of British Airways flights comes at a strategic time as we prepare for Visit Malaysia 2026,” he said during a ceremony to mark the flight today.
Loke said with trade agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in place, Malaysia can anticipate stronger business engagements between both nations, fostering closer ties and unlocking new economic opportunities.
The CPTPP between Malaysia and the UK is a trade agreement to boost market access, diversify supply chains and expand opportunities for key sectors in both countries.
Loke said the presence of British Airways at KLIA will do more than just connecting the UK and Malaysia.
“It will also enhance our appeal as a transit hub for travellers heading to other Asean destinations.”
Malaysia officially assumed the Asean chairmanship on Jan 1 this year. The country is expected to host the 46th Asean Summit from May 26-27.
