PETALING JAYA:
A Hindu temple was turned into a temporary shelter for victims of the massive gas pipeline explosion which rocked Putra Heights this morning.

The Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple along Jalan Putra Harmoni, which is close to the blast site, opened its doors after scores of wounded people started streaming in.

Temple adviser R Maickavasagam told FMT that his committee members, seeing that the injured people needed help, alerted the authorities and tended to those needing urgent help.

“People were screaming and crying for help. So, our temple president, committee members and devotees immediately opened the gates to let them in.”

Maickavasagam said, an hour later, the temple was turned into an emergency relief centre, with police and paramedics arriving at the scene.

He said injured residents streamed in, some with burns, bleeding wounds and broken bones. He said the temple’s medical volunteers, aided by the Red Crescent Society and other first responders, gave first aid before sending the more seriously injured to nearby hospitals.

“Some victims had burns all over their bodies, while others were traumatised. We gave them medical attention and emotional support.

“It didn’t matter if they were Indian, Malay, Chinese or foreigners. If they were hurt or needed help, they were welcome here.”

Muslim residents and rescue workers were also allowed a space to perform their prayers inside the temple compound.

Temple volunteers also served food and drinks, provided tents and toilets, and set up resting areas for victims and frontliners.

“We have always served the people here. Today, we just did what was right. Our doors are open to all,” Maickavasagam said.
