
Wisma Putra said this replaces the previously planned staggered deployment of two teams from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) following an operational update from the agency.
The foreign ministry had earlier said the first Nadma team comprising 10 personnel will leave today, and the second team of 40 personnel tomorrow.
“Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to regional cooperation and will continue to contribute meaningfully to humanitarian relief and disaster management efforts across Asean,” it said in the earlier statement.
“In the spirit of shared responsibility, Malaysia stands with all affected communities during this period of recovery and resilience.”
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep concern over the scale of devastation and said Malaysia stands ready to support ongoing humanitarian and recovery efforts.
In today’s Wisma Putra statement, foreign minister Mohamad Hasan said Asean member states will coordinate closely through the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management to ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered in a timely, appropriate, and effective manner.
The earthquake that struck central Myanmar also affected northern Thailand and parts of southern China, resulting in loss of life and widespread destruction.
