PETALING JAYA:
Police are investigating a recent incident in which a Dayak saleswoman in Central i-City, Shah Alam, was allegedly racially abused by a customer.

In a statement today, Shah Alam police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said the victim lodged a report at 8.42pm yesterday over the matter, in which she said she was scolded by a customer while conducting a transaction.

“The suspect was a Malay man who had come to the shop to buy a drink that cost RM6.50.

“He gave the victim RM10 in payment. The misunderstanding occurred when the victim asked the suspect for 50 sen because the cash box did not have enough change.

“The suspect then mocked the victim for asking for 50 sen. The victim then closed the cash box, causing the suspect to be dissatisfied and scold her with harsh and insulting words,” Iqbal said.

He said the victim’s colleague helped to de-escalate the situation, and the suspect left after the transaction was completed.

Iqbal said further investigations found that the victim had sent CCTV footage of the incident to her family members, after which “irresponsible individuals” had shared the video on TikTok.

He said the case is being investigated under Sections 504 and 509 of the Penal Code, which relate to insults with intent to provoke a breach of the peace as well as insults to modesty.

Both sections provide for up to two and five years’ jail respectively, or a fine if found guilty.

Iqbal said the case is also being investigated under Section 14 of the Small Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour, which provides for a fine of up to RM100, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, which provides for up to a year’s jail or a fine of up to RM50,000 if found guilty.

National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang yesterday called on the police to immediately investigate a viral video of a Dayak saleswoman allegedly being threatened and scolded with racist words by a man in Central i-City.

Bernama quoted him as saying appropriate action should be taken against the perpetrator.
