Lorry driver claims trial to causing death of Singaporean child

JOHOR BAHRU:
A lorry driver pleaded not guilty to three counts of driving under the influence of drugs, which resulted in the death of a Singaporean child and injuries to two people on Jalan Pantai, Johor Bahru, on March 16.

I Muniandy @ Ang Ah Leang, 57, entered his plea after the charges were read to him in Mandarin before magistrate Nur Fatin Farid.

Muniandy was charged under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of Noah Saliqin Mohamad Khairuz, seven.

If convicted, he faces 10 to 15 years in jail, a fine of up to RM100,000, disqualification from holding a driver’s licence for at least seven years as well as cancellation of his probationary licence.

He also faces two charges under Section 44(1A)(a) of the same Act for driving under the influence of drugs, causing injuries to Khairuz Bahrawi, 44, and Lina Yulianti, 38.

If convicted, he faces imprisonment of seven to 10 years, a maximum RM50,000 fine, disqualification from holding a driver’s licence for at least seven years and cancellation of his probationary licence.

He is accused of committing the offences on Jalan Pantai, Johor Bahru, at 10.10pm on March 16.

The court set bail at RM4,000 per charge in one surety each, ordered Muniandy to surrender his passport, and suspended his licence until the disposal of the case.

He is also required to report to the nearest police station once a month.

Deputy public prosecutor Amirah Tasnam Saleh appeared for the prosecution, while Muniandy was unrepresented. Case mention is scheduled for April 23.
