The RM50 million suit Rosli filed in 2021 was resolved on the first day of the trial today.
Rosli said the Kuala Lumpur High Court today recorded a consent judgment in the suit filed against Lokman in 2021 after the Umno man accused 1MDB’s lead counsel of receiving RM1.7 billion in legal fees, or 10% of the RM17 billion settlement with Goldman Sachs in the 1MDB case.
Lokman admitted in court today that his statement about Rosli was false and defamatory, and acknowledged the lawyer did not claim or receive any commission from the 1MDB asset recovery value.
He said the legal fees for Rosli’s firm, RDS Partnership, were based on a pre-agreed time cost – similar to other lawyers acting for 1MDB – and were not based on any commission or percentage of the recovered assets.
Lokman also acknowledged that RDS Partnership did not receive RM1.7 billion from the Goldman Sachs settlement or RM283 million from AmBank as settlement, admitting that the allegations were false and defamatory.
He said it was “impossible” for Rosli or his firm to have received any proceeds from the recovery of 1MDB’s assets as they were all paid directly to the accountant-general’s department.
“With deep remorse, I hereby express my sincere apologies as my false and defamatory statements have tarnished Rosli’s character, integrity and reputation, subjecting him to public ridicule in the Malaysian community and diminishing his standing among the public,” he said.
“I deeply regret that my false and defamatory statements have caused Rosli to suffer continuing humiliation and harm.”
Lokman also said he had removed all three videos containing the allegations which defamed Rosli.
Rosli had denied the claims and had previously secured an open apology from the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), media outlet Sinar Harian and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia political analyst Mazlan Ali for similar defamatory claims.
