MELAKA:
The government will enforce the Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) 2024 starting April 7.

Domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali said the law was being enforced to curb the sale of counterfeit motor vehicle engine oil.

“This new order will enable consumers to identify the sale of genuine motor vehicle engine oil in the market, thus curbing the sale of counterfeit oil which could pose safety risks and cause accidents on the road.

“This order will also protect the interests of motor vehicle engine oil product manufacturing companies by curbing the risk of the production of fake products by irresponsible parties,” he said.

He said this in a press conference at the Tangga Batu industrial estate here today.

Armizan said engine oil products, whether produced locally or imported, must obtain a certificate of authenticity through Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd, the party responsible for certifying and issuing product compliance labels for that purpose.

He said the government had given manufacturing companies six months to comply with the directives regarding the gazette order, starting Oct 11, 2024.

“The ministry in collaboration with Sirim has been organising engagement programmes since 2022 involving almost all major players in the motor vehicle engine oil industry in the country.

“Strict action will be taken against any importing company, distributor, or seller who sells uncertified products and does not have a valid compliance label from the authorities,” he said.

In a similar development, he said 240 complaints related to motor vehicle engine oil products were received by his department from January 2019 to February this year with 36 case actions taken and a seizure value of RM1,154,198.
