Help KL City with funding, Khalid urges DBKL, FT minister

The ex-KLFA president says this is needed to help the football club pay off its salary arrears owed to players while remaining in the top league.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Amanah leader Khalid Samad has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall and federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa to support Kuala Lumpur City Football Club (KL City) financially.

Khalid, the former KL Football Association (KLFA) president, said this was necessary to ensure KL City could pay off its millions in arrears and continue to play in the Malaysian Super League.

He also said the football club’s current management should relinquish their posts if they were unable to carry out their duties well.

“We must not allow KL City to drop to the Malaysian Premier League just because of a lack of support and funds.

“Throughout my time as KLFA president, I strived to ensure KL City was in the Super League, with the hope that the club would not only compete in the top league but also contribute to national football development,” he said in a press conference.

Earlier this month, KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar said the club might withdraw from the Super League next season and compete in the lower tier instead to resolve outstanding debts accrued by KL City’s previous leadership.

Syed Yazid said RM15 million in salary arrears were owed to KL City’s players, and that this was a reduction from the RM24 million owed when he first took over in October 2024.

However, Khalid questioned the figures mentioned by Syed Yazid.

“The amount of RM24 million is illogical, and he claims that they have reduced this to RM15 million in about five months. It seems like he’s plucking the numbers out of thin air,” said the former MP.
