Karim said the applicants would undergo a thorough screening process to check if they were involved in financial fraud, money laundering, scams, or prostitution, the Dayak Daily reported.

He stressed that at the monthly meetings, he would ensure that only those who qualify would be given approval.

“We don’t want people abusing this programme as a loophole to engage in illicit activities. Sarawak is a welcoming destination, but only for those who meet the criteria,” he was quoted as saying.

Karim went on to say that Sarawak’s MM2H programme saw a surge in applications last year, with 560 requests received.

He said applications from China now outnumber those from the US, Europe, and Singapore.

Earlier this month, Karim said China’s huge population and familiarity with Malaysia were likely reasons its nationals make up the bulk of MM2H applicants.

He said this when dismissing claims that the initiative solely targets Chinese nationals.

MM2H is a programme for foreigners who may obtain long-stay visas of up to 15 years in return for financial and property investment ranging from US$150,000 to US$2 million.
