“We will send it within a week after today’s annual general meeting to obtain their feedback,” Ezri Abdul Wahab, who was returned as Bar president unopposed today, told a press conference.
Earlier, the Bar unanimously passed two resolutions reaffirming its commitment to defending judicial independence and condemning any interference by the executive, legislature, or unauthorised individuals.
At the opening of the legal year, Tengku Maimun had said judicial independence must be protected at all costs and that external interference in the appointment or promotion of judges was unacceptable.
The top judge, who is scheduled to go on mandatory retirement in June, said any unsanctioned person who interferes with the Judicial Appointments Commission’s (JAC) functions would amount to committing a crime.
Her remarks were widely interpreted within the legal fraternity as a reference to appointments that may have been made outside the proper constitutional and statutory framework.
Ezri said the Bar Council had engaged the JAC chaired by Tengku Maimun to amend the Act governing the commission.
“It is an ongoing effort and we have meetings with two main persons in the JAC. They have given us pointers and we are looking at them. This will be discussed at the next council meeting,” he added.
