Satees files MACC report over alleged vote-buying in DAP polls

Ex-DAP assemblyman Satees Muniandy says it is concerning when a party in the government allegedly engages in money politics.

Urimai secretary Satees Muniandy said he filed the report at MACC’s office in Penang at around noon today.
PETALING JAYA:
Former Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy has filed a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over allegations of vote-buying in the run-up to DAP’s elections for its central executive committee this weekend.

Satees told FMT that he had filed the report at MACC’s office in Penang at around noon today.

He said he had no interest in meddling in the internal affairs of DAP, a party he left long ago.

“However, my concern is that when a political party within the (federal) government is involved in money politics, it affects the government as a whole.

“Moreover, DAP plays a key role in leading the Penang government, so this issue will inevitably impact the state. I hope the MACC does not drag its feet on this matter,” he told FMT.

Satees, who is now with Urimai, said yesterday that a life member of DAP had alleged that vote-buying had crept into the election process for the party’s top leadership posts.

The member claimed delegates were being offered cash in the guise of “travel allowances” and a weekend stay at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Satees also said multiple sources told him a Penang MP and assemblyman were involved in securing votes for their political superiors.

DAP organising secretary Steven Sim responded by denying the allegations, expressing his full confidence in DAP’s values, its delegates and members, adding that such things would not happen.

He also said that the party had appointed a third party – an international firm – to oversee the election process and ensure that it is conducted fairly and transparently.

Satees said that the matter is not about how the election process is conducted, but about the alleged money politics happening that must not be taken lightly.

“Where did this money come from? I have some crucial information that MACC needs to look into,” said the Urimai secretary.

Satees claimed that the likes of Sim or DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook would not be able to take action as those involved are “simply too powerful or influential”.
