KUALA LUMPUR:
MIC deputy president M Saravanan has withdrawn his challenge for a debate on Hinduism with independent preacher Zamri Vinoth.

In a press conference here today, he said the decision was made based on the advice of national unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang.

“This is for the sake of national harmony,” he said.

Saravanan also said that his invitation for a debate was for him to defend Hinduism, and that it would not have involved comparing religions.

He said he wished to correct and educate Zamri regarding his views of Hinduism.

“He might be from a background where he has been taught (about Hinduism) wrongly. My intention is to educate him,” he said.

Yesterday, Aaron expressed hope that the proposed debate between Saravanan and Zamri would be called off, saying debates focusing too much on religious differences could escalate tension and strain relationships among Malaysia’s multi-religious communities.

“Discussions or debates related to religion should not continue if they only aim to find differences and ignore efforts to build unity.

“Religious discussions should be conducted with full respect and awareness of our society’s diversity,” he said.

Saravanan, the Tapah MP, nevertheless urged the government to take action against Zamri and ensure that the issue is put to rest.

He advised the Indian community not to take the law into their own hands, but to lodge police reports against Zamri instead.

Separately, Saravanan said Barisan Nasional’s (BN) election machinery in Tapah had started meeting with voters and preparing for the Ayer Kuning by-election.

He said he was confident that BN would win with a bigger majority, no matter who the coalition nominates.

When asked if he was concerned about the possibility of Perikatan National fielding a PAS candidate, he said BN had gone up against PAS in the area before with no issues.

“Although I do not underestimate PAS’s strength in Tapah, we have our advantages. Indian voters will not run from us, based on our track record,” he added.

Aaron later expressed his gratitude over Saravanan’s move to call off the debate.

“His decision is a very appropriate step in maintaining the country’s harmony and unity. I also appreciate Zamri for welcoming this,” he said.

Aaron said the decision should serve as a good example to all Malaysians to continue strengthening unity and mutual respect.

“This decision is a positive step that reminds us of the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in a diverse nation, and it should be used as a guiding principle for future generations.”
