PETALING JAYA:
Rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) will hand over purported evidence on the alleged Sabah mining scandal to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today.

LFL adviser and former MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said she received the evidence from the alleged whistleblower, known as Albert, after meeting him yesterday.

She told a press conference here that Albert had provided her with the full, unedited video recordings of conversations he had with Sabah elected representatives, among others, which allegedly proved corruption.

“I met with the whistleblower yesterday, who has not been named before. His name is Albert. I won’t mention his surname due to safety concerns.

“Albert has taken a big risk to come forward since no one was taking him seriously when he first brought this up to Malaysiakini, and he’s faced obstacle after obstacle. So now he’s passed it over to us to see what we can do,” Latheefa said.

She added that her colleague, Zaid Malek, would submit the material comprising 10 videos to MACC this afternoon.

“After this, there should be no more excuses (concerning the MACC investigation) and I urge the government to protect Albert,” said Latheefa.

MACC chief Azam Baki previously said a lack of information had made it difficult for MACC to carry out a thorough investigation.

He also said videos about the alleged scandal lacked credibility and could not be relied on in the investigations as they had been heavily edited.

In January, Azam said MACC had completed its probe into the purported whistleblower and a former CEO of a company linked to the alleged scandal, with the investigation papers submitted to the deputy public prosecutor.
