The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said this in response to Jelutong MP RSN Rayer’s statement questioning the “seeming inaction” over Zamri’s post.
On Friday, Rayer asked why Zamri’s post had not been removed or blocked by MCMC or the police after multiple police reports were lodged over the matter.
In a statement, MCMC said it had requested the removal of the post, which was found to contain elements of an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) for improper use of network facilities.
“However, the decision to remove the content was made by the platform subject to its assessment of the justifications provided and the platform’s community guidelines.
“In this regard, Facebook removed the said post on March 9 (today),” the commission said.
A check by FMT found that the post is no longer available on Zamri’s Facebook page.
In his now-removed Facebook post, Zamri had described Hindu worshippers performing the kavadi ritual during Thaipusam as being “possessed and drunk on toddy”.
His remarks followed the controversy surrounding three Era FM radio hosts, who were widely criticised for their mockery of the same religious practice.
MIC deputy president M Saravanan later called for the authorities to arrest Zamri under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, and said he had raised the matter with the prime minister and home minister.
