“Our announcers have acknowledged their mistake and have issued a public apology. As a responsible broadcaster, we take this matter seriously.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to take the three individuals off-air until further notice while we review the situation internally,” it said in a statement today.
The move follows public backlash over a video featuring the presenters on the 3 Pagi Era show mimicking the kavadi dance, a sacred Hindu ritual performed during Thaipusam in devotion to Lord Muruga.
The clip, which included footage of the DJs chanting the phrase “Vel Vel” while laughing, was widely condemned as disrespectful towards Hindu traditions.
The DJs – Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Effendi Ahmad Aruani – issued a public apology, admitting their mistake and acknowledging the insensitivity of their actions.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil meanwhile instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to launch a full investigation and summon Astro and ERA FM’s management for an explanation.
Astro Audio also expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that the video had caused hurt and disappointment.
“We are taking steps to strengthen our content review processes to ensure that we continue to create programming that reflects the values and expectations of our audience,” it said.
The company added that it is working closely with authorities to ensure full compliance with media regulations, saying it would continue to listen, learn and improve.
