PUTRAJAYA:
Two potential witnesses who have been called by the defence to testify in Najib Razak’s 1MDB trial have yet to obtain the green light from the government to appear in court.

Lawyer Shafee Abdullah, representing Najib, informed the court that the potential witnesses – former 1MDB lawyers – had not received a waiver of solicitor-client privilege.

He said the privilege belonged to 1MDB, currently headed by Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican, and clearance must come from the company.

“One of them (the lawyers) previously gave a legal opinion,” he said.

However, Shafee did not name the two individuals.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib told the court that, according to 1MDB’s current lawyers, Johan would sign the waiver by today.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah then directed that the prosecution and defence update the court on the status of the matter tomorrow.

Meanwhile, former 1MDB chairman Che Lodin Wok Kamaruddin continued his testimony today.

He insisted that he had not acted as Najib’s “proxy” in the company and was not appointed to ensure that all decisions made by the then prime minister were executed.

Under cross-examination by the prosecution, Lodin agreed that 1MDB could not take a US$975 million loan without Najib’s approval.

Najib is on trial for 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering over funds amounting to RM2.28 billion that were deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
