KUALA LUMPUR:
Almost 2,000 pieces of lewd content were taken down from social media between 2022 and Feb 15 this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the 1,993 pieces of content were removed by social media platform providers following a directive from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

“A total of 3,670 websites (containing) lewd content were also blocked in the same period,” he said.

Fahmi was responding to Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar), who asked what steps the government had taken to curb lewd advertisements on social media.

He said MCMC had set up a special team to monitor lewd content and other offensive material on social media.

Earlier this month, Fahmi told the Dewan Rakyat that 93% of the 224,403 pieces of gambling-related content removed from various platforms originated from Facebook.

He also said that 5,026 gambling websites were blocked by internet service providers during the same period.

YouTube meanwhile removed 5,115 pieces of content, including gambling advertisements.
