PETALING JAYA:
An interfaith group has urged the authorities to take stern action on a pair of foreigners who allegedly went door to door at a block of People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flats to propagate their faith to Muslims.

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) said if the allegations were true, the pair should be deported and banned from returning to Malaysia.

MCCBCHST president Tan Hoe Chieow said this was the second case in the span of about two months involving foreigners propagating their faith in public.

“We are always against people going house to house to propagate their religion. This certainly should not happen in Malaysia.

“Stern action must be taken by the authorities, especially the police, because what they are doing is creating unease and unhappiness among Malaysians.

“As foreigners, they could have entered the country using tourist, education, or work passes. In any case, they have broken (the terms of) their visit passes, so the home ministry should take stern action.

“Detain them for questioning and, if need be, I think they should be deported and banned from coming to Malaysia again,” Tan told FMT.

A viral video showed residents of the PPR in Wangsa Maju ordering the pair to leave the flats after they allegedly went door to door to propagate their faith.

One resident could be heard saying in English: “Don’t let me see you guys again.”

Wangsa Maju police chief Lazim Ismail said no police report had been filed on the matter.

In the earlier case in January, two foreigners were confronted by a member of the public after allegedly distributing leaflets on Christianity at Desa Setapak. Police launched an investigation and were reportedly tracking the duo down.

MCCBCHST also criticised the actions of the first pair, saying the propagation of faiths to non-Muslims should be only done in houses of worship.

It cautioned against conducting such activities in public to ensure religious harmony.
