PETALING JAYA:
Two leaders from human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) are set to be charged next week with trespassing on the home ministry in Putrajaya, said to be a protected area.

Suaram’s executive director, Sevan Doraisamy, and coordinator, Azura Nasron, along with an unnamed individual, are expected to be charged under Section 5 of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act at the Putrajaya magistrates’ court on Tuesday.

“We believe these charges stem from the police’s allegation that the trio entered the home ministry’s complex in Putrajaya, which they claim is a protected area,” Suaram said in a statement today.

On Feb 12, Suaram claimed that Sevan and Azura were arrested by police in relation to an investigation into their alleged illegal entry into the ministry’s complex.

Putrajaya police denied the arrests at the time, saying the duo were only brought in to have their statements recorded.

Suaram’s representatives, along with family members of detainees held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), had gathered at the ministry to submit a memorandum demanding answers on the detainees’ well-being.

It followed a hunger strike that took place outside Sungai Buloh prison to protest the rejection of their visit applications by the prisons department.
