In a statement, the Bukit Bendera MP wondered if detractors were genuinely looking out for the people or if they just want to preserve the status quo for their own political gain.

“If they truly care about the people, then they must acknowledge that doing nothing is not an option.

“Renewal is not about taking away – it is about giving communities a better future.”

Syerleena said the proposed legislation, which has yet to be tabled, was about ensuring the next generation did not inherit slums, and for cities to remain vibrant and liveable.

She said economic opportunities flourished in tandem with urban development.

Syerleena said the proposed act would also create jobs in the construction and real estate sectors and boost local economies.

“The URA aims to improve the quality of life for thousands of Malaysians who currently live in deteriorating housing, while making sure that urban progress is not reserved for the elite, and that every Malaysian has the right to live in a safe, modern home.”

Earlier today, Syerleena’s DAP colleague, Lim Lip Eng, slammed PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man for claiming the proposed Act is aimed at pushing poor Malays and Indians out of urban areas, saying such allegations were nonsensical.

Lim, who is the Kepong MP, said the URA was intended to restore residential homes that were old and unsafe to live in.

This afternoon, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the URA would give the government and developers the power to take land and homes without the consent of their owners.

Syerleena however dismissed such claims saying there would be no forced seizures.

“The government has made it clear that ownership will remain protected and that redevelopment will be carried out through consultation and consensus with the affected communities.”
