KUALA LUMPUR:
The government has vowed to take stern action against television stations that violate guidelines, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil says.

He said any failure to comply with these guidelines could result in “consequences”.

“I assure you that the government will take strict action,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama yesterday.

Fahmi, the government spokesman, was asked to comment on the controversy over a cross-dresser who had attended a music awards show broadcast live on Sunday.

Fahmi said the television station was aware of the guidelines.

“The management should have been more responsible. I am very disappointed with the people who ran the awards show.

“This should not have happened. They knew and they allowed it. Very bad,” he added.

The Islamic development department said on Monday that the relevant parties would be summoned for clarification.
