KUALA LUMPUR:
About 50 people staged a peaceful protest in front of the US embassy here today to oppose president Donald Trump’s proposal to occupy Gaza and forcibly remove the Palestinian population.

The multiracial crowd gathered at Menara Tabung Haji after Friday prayers and marched to the embassy on Jalan Tun Razak, carrying Palestinian flags and placards reading “Gaza is not for sale”.

Among those present were Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Azmi, Pejuang information chief Rafique Rashid Ali, and activist Tian Chua.

The protest was organised by civil society group Sekretariat Solidariti Palestin and the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations.

Trump sparked anger across the Middle East with his proposal last week for the US to take over Gaza, move its residents, and transform the territory into the “Riviera of the Middle East”.

He later said that while he is committed to buying and owning Gaza, he could allow sections of the land to be rebuilt by other states in the Middle East.

Israel’s military assault on Gaza has killed more than 47,000 Palestinians in the last 16 months, and led to accusations of genocide and war crimes that Tel Aviv denies.

The assault has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s population and caused a hunger crisis. The fighting has now paused amid a fragile ceasefire, reported Reuters.

The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered on Oct 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking some 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
