PETALING JAYA:
A 21-year-old man has been charged in the Ampang magistrates’ court with assaulting his older sister at their home in Ampang, Selangor.

Fazli Othman, who is unemployed, claimed trial after the charge was read to him in court.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing hurt, read with Section 326A for causing hurt to a family member.

Fazli is accused of committing the offence at a house in Hulu Kelang, Ampang, at about 10am on Feb 10.

Section 323 carries a maximum penalty of a year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction, while Section 326A provides for the jail term to be doubled.

Bail was set at RM2,500 but Fazli failed to pay the amount and was placed under remand at the Kuala Langat satellite prison. Case mention was fixed for March 25.

In a statement, Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the alleged assault was sparked by a misunderstanding between the siblings and that the victim sustained injuries to her head and back.

He said Fazli was arrested at 2.15pm on Feb 10 and police seized a parang. The accused had also tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
