PETALING JAYA:
A married couple in Penang has claimed trial to a charge of neglecting their 10-year-old son and exposing him to harm, causing him to require medical treatment.

The couple, aged 35 and 33, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to them jointly before Butterworth sessions court judge Nor Azah Kasran, Berita Harian reported.

They are accused of committing the offence at a residence in Taman Sentosa, Nibong Tebal, between Jan 29 and 30.

The charge under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 is punishable by a maximum of 20 years’ jail, and a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Rifaie Riyaludin handled the prosecution while the couple was not represented.

He said the child is a key witness in the case and is still being treated at Sungai Bakap Hospital.

Rifaie did not propose bail for the accused as the offence is non-bailable.

The court set March 6 for case mention and submission of medical reports.
