KUALA LUMPUR:
Subsidiaries of the National Farmers’ Organisation (Nafas) will be restructured to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy agriculture and food security minister Arthur Joseph Kurup said non-viable companies that had become financial liabilities to Nafas would also be wound up.

He said these were among eight strategies and directions outlined to improve Nafas, ensuring that the organisation is revitalised and operates in line with its original objectives.

“A review of current businesses and projects will also be conducted to focus on viable enterprises and reduce reliance on the fertiliser supply sector,” he said in reply to a question from Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran).

Arthur also said an independent special panel would be established to oversee key decisions and prevent abuse of power in Nafas’s management, following a backlog in the distribution of fertiliser to farmers in several states.

Nafas’s constitution was suspended on Nov 1 and investigations into its governance and administration held to improve its operations and management.
