PAS extends CNY greetings, calls for more dialogue

PAS says such discussions will help address actions or tendencies that may seem to undermine the core pillars of Malaysian society, especially in matters of interfaith relations.

PETALING JAYA:
PAS has used its Chinese New Year greetings today to call for continued dialogue, stating that certain misunderstandings have exposed Malaysians to “unnecessary and unproductive” conflict and tension.

In a statement, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said such discussions will help address actions or tendencies that may seem to undermine the core pillars of Malaysian society, especially in interfaith relations.

“Specifically, several recent incidents and controversies involving Islamic teachings, laws and Muslims’ dietary needs would not have occurred if all parties had respected and understood the boundaries and sensitivities of each community,” he said.

“Taking matters lightly, acting arbitrarily or undermining the legitimate interests and perspectives of others are entirely contrary to the Malaysian identity of mutual respect and cannot be justified.”

He stressed that such behaviour must be promptly addressed as failure to do so – whether for political, business or other opportunistic reasons – will only provoke “equally damaging responses” from the affected communities.

Takiyuddin added that mutual respect and understanding are not mere values or ideals to be invoked at certain times, but instead represent the Malaysian way of life.

He also said that celebrations such as the Chinese New Year serve as a powerful symbol of harmony and unity in a nation of diverse cultures, beliefs and backgrounds.

Stating that PAS extends its heartfelt wishes for a Happy New Year to all Malaysian Chinese, Takiyuddin said the celebration serves as a meaningful occasion to reunite with loved ones, strengthen bonds, and reflect on past events and memories, particularly those from the past year.

“In the spirit of the New Year and fresh beginnings, it is fitting for all parties to reaffirm our shared commitment to the core Malaysian identity that has guided us towards progress and harmony and serves as a symbol of our nation’s success,” he said.

“Gong Xi Fa Chai. May this year bring prosperity, good health and happiness to all.”
