Mohamad, known as Mat Sabu, said he would engage with the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority and the Muda Agricultural Development Authority.
“I will also hold direct engagements with the padi farmers,” he said in a WhatsApp message to the media today.
A group of PeSawah members had earlier staged a peaceful demonstration in front of Wisma Tani here, demanding an increase in the minimum purchase price for padi to RM1,800 per tonne from the current RM1,300.
Ten representatives from the group later proceeded to the Perdana Putra building to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which was initially intended as the gathering point of the protest.
When tabling the 2024 budget, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, had announced an increase in the floor price of padi from RM1,200 to RM1,300.
PeSawah chairman Abdul Rashid Yob said the prime minister’s political secretary, Chan Ming Kai, informed him during the submission of the memorandum that the PMO had promised to intervene in the matter.
“The prime minister’s representative informed us that they had agreed with our two demands and would hold a discussion.
“A final decision will be made as soon as possible,” Rashid said.
