KUALA LUMPUR:
Police will soon recall witnesses in the Teoh Beng Hock case following a Kuala Lumpur High Court order last November to reopen and thoroughly reinvestigate all aspects of his death.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director Shuhaily Zain said the relevant witnesses would be identified and their statements recorded after the Chinese New Year holiday.

“I am confident this process will not take long, and the investigation papers will be submitted within the stipulated timeframe,” he told reporters during an engagement session with journalists at Bukit Aman today, Bernama reported.

Shuhaily also confirmed that he and the investigating officers would revisit the scene of the former Selangor exco aide’s death.

“We have received a mandamus order from the High Court to submit a complete investigation paper on this case by May. As everyone is aware, the case is around 15 years old, and the location has undergone significant changes,” he added.

On Nov 21, the Kuala Lumpur High Court directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death of Teoh, which occurred over 15 years ago.

Teoh, a DAP member, died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict.

However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh’s death was caused by “one or more persons unknown”, including MACC officers.

Two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh’s death, but both cases were classified as requiring no further action, or “NFA”, by the public prosecutor.

In a separate case, Shuhaily said police are still investigating the acid attack on national football player and Selangor FC’s Faisal Abdul Halim.

He said the case is not closed but admitted that no new leads have been found so far.

On May 5 last year, Faisal, 26, was splashed with acid at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara, causing him to suffer fourth-degree burns on several parts of his body.
