Cops record statement from Cecelia Yap over insensitive remark

IGP Razarudin Husain says the 65-year-old retired nurse was asked 21 questions today, from 11am to 12.30pm.

Facebook user Cecelia Yap had left a comment on a post by Harith Iskander mocking the recent ham sandwich debacle.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have recorded a statement from Facebook user Cecelia Yap over her insensitive remark on the ham sandwich uproar which had been deemed disrespectful towards Muslims.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said Yap, a 65-year-old retired nurse, had her statement recorded from 11am to 12.30pm today, Berita Harian reported.

He said police asked her 21 questions. She had recently admitted posting the Facebook comment that had been deemed offensive.

“A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized to aid in the investigation. The investigation paper will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action,” he was quoted as saying.

Yap has apologised for the comment left on the thread of a Facebook status that was originally posted by comedian Harith Iskander, who is also being probed for joking that his faith was shaken after seeing a menu advertising “Ham Sap Coffee” since it contained the word “ham”.

In a statement, she said she would fully cooperate with the police in their investigation into her remark, which had led to multiple reports being filed against her.

“I hereby apologise to all parties offended by my comment, especially my Muslim friends whom I respect. I deeply regret my insensitive comment and promise not to repeat my actions in the future.

“Once again, I humbly apologise to all Malaysians over the incident. I ask that everyone offended by my comment would forgive my mistake,” she said.

A total of 16 reports have been lodged against Harith and Yap, who are accused of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad through their remarks on social media.

Their comments followed the controversy surrounding the sale of chicken ham sandwiches allegedly lacking halal certification at a convenience store in Universiti Malaya.
