Sandakan fire and rescue station chief Severinus Sainkui said the 63-year-old driver sustained serious injuries, and all seven were taken to the Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan by the public.
In a statement, Severinus said the Sandakan fire and rescue station received an emergency call via the MERS 999 hotline at about 9.15am.
“A fire engine and eight personnel were rushed to the scene, which was 10km away,” he said.
The bus, carrying 17 Chinese nationals, including four children, was reportedly on a sightseeing tour when the incident occurred.
The rescue team also removed an oil spill from the scene using a hose to draw water from the fire engine’s tank.
