He said his conversations with Chinese president Xi Jinping do not focus merely on trade, investment and the economy.
“We also talk about the need to build this friendship based on trust and mutual respect,” he said at the 2025 Chinese New Year celebration jointly organised by the tourism and culture ministries of the two countries here tonight.
China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the last 15 years.
Present were deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing, and China’s culture and tourism minister Sun Yeli.
Anwar said Beijing’s emphasis on promoting cultural respect aligns with Malaysia’s principle of inclusivity.
He said the Spring Festival, known in Malaysia as Chinese New Year, is a testament to the unity of Malaysia’s multicultural society.
“This celebration brings together people from all communities, cultures and regions across Malaysia. It reflects our shared commitment to harmony and mutual appreciation,” he said.
Anwar also praised the country’s tourism, arts and culture ministry for promoting Malaysia as the main destination for Chinese tourists.
“This celebration will cultivate a meaningful cultural exchange that will strengthen our ties, not just between ourselves, but also with other countries,” he said.
