7-up for Malaysia in Indonesia Masters

Seven Malaysian pairs will feature in quarter-final matches in all three categories tomorrow.

Another three doubles pairs have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Masters, making it a total of seven Malaysian pairs vying for semi-final spots tomorrow.

Men’s doubles pairs Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King, and women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah joined four other pairs who had advanced in the championships being played in Jakarta.

Earlier, men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and mixed doubles pairs Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin qualified for the quarter-finals.

Later in the evening, Wei Chong-Kai Wun beat Taiwanese twins Lee Fang Jen-Fang Chih in straight games of 23-21, 21-13. This was followed by Pearly-Thinaah, who defeated Taiwan’s Hu Ling Fang-Jheng Yu Chieh 21-19, 21-16 with relative ease.

Arif-Roy King surprisingly had an easy time beating home pair Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan 21-13, 21-14 in just 26 minutes, to round off a good day for the Malaysians.

Men’s doubles pair Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong, ranked 43 in the world, put up a gallant display against the world No 4 Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto before bowing out 21-16, 7-21, 15-21.

Women’s singles player K Letshanaa also came close to creating an upset but lost to Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam in three games, with the rubber game stretching to deuce. The final score was 18-21, 21-17, 20-22.

In another match, women’s doubles shuttlers Go Pei Kee-Teah Mei Xing created an upset when they defeated India’s Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa. 16-21, 24-22, 21-18 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Another men’s doubles pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, failed to make it past the second round when they lost to China’s Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han 21-16, 21-14.
