Welfare dept orders childcare centre linked to baby’s death to close

The order was issued as the centre’s operator will face charges in court under the Child Act 2001, says Selangor exco.

SHAH ALAM:
The childcare centre at Bandar Saujana Putra in Kuala Langat linked to the death of a four-month old baby on Jan 3 has been ordered to close permanently by the welfare department.

Selangor women’s development and social welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the order was issued as the centre’s operator will face charges in court under the Child Act 2001.

The parents of other children have been asked to send them to other centres.

“Maybe, the parents assumed (the closure) is temporary but according to the department, it is permanently shut.

“The childcare centre will remain closed as it is unregistered and there is a case involving the Child Act,” she said when met after a Selangor women’s gathering, officiated by menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Anfaal said she was informed that there were about 25 children at the centre, who were being looked after by two caregivers.

This does not meet the welfare department’s requirement of a ratio of one caregiver for every five babies 12 months and below.

She also said the childcare centre was not even in the process of registering with the welfare department.

“The two caregivers never went for training set by the department to certify them as qualified,” she said.
