We agree to disagree with PN allies, says Gerakan

The Perikatan Nasional component says it remains committed to inclusivity and national harmony despite differing views by its allies on race and religion.

Gerakan information chief Wendy Subramaniam called for Malaysians to reject divisive politics and false promises.
PETALING JAYA:
Gerakan has defended its position within Perikatan Nasional (PN), saying its commitment to moving beyond racial and religious narratives does not waver despite criticism from political analysts.

Gerakan information chief Wendy Subramaniam said the party’s focus on inclusivity, social justice, and national harmony reflects its founding ideals, even if other PN component parties continue to emphasise identity-based politics.

“While it’s true some of our coalition partners have their own approaches, we respect differences in ideas and beliefs. We agree to disagree. That is the essence of democracy and tolerance,” she said in a statement.

Previously, FMT reported that political analyst Syaza Shukri played down Gerakan’s ambitions to shift the political narrative in Malaysia away from race and religion, and said the party will find it hard to escape identity politics as a PN component.

Wendy said Gerakan has proposed eight key reforms aimed at shifting focus away from divisive issues and towards pressing national concerns, such as the economy, education, healthcare, unemployment, governance, national harmony, and social security transformation.

“Our priorities are realistic and inclusive, addressing the concerns of all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion,” she said, adding that Gerakan remains committed to improving the lives of all citizens.

Wendy also accused critics of applying double standards, pointing out that the parties currently in Pakatan Harapan (PH) had previously worked with PAS in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition without raising concerns about racial or religious agendas.

“Now we are with PAS, the same critics suddenly claim this is unacceptable. Such hypocrisy undermines political maturity,” she said.

Wendy urged Malaysians to reject divisive politics and false promises, emphasising the need for political maturity and unity in building a “Bangsa Malaysia”.

“Gerakan does not want to be drawn into dirty politics or false reforms. Our focus remains on serving the people and fulfilling the trust placed in us,” she said.
