PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia’s top two mixed doubles pairs have qualified for the semi-finals of the India Open, keeping alive hopes of an all-Malaysian final.

Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai were the first to advance after they beat their Taiwanese opponents with relative ease.

The world No 5 husband-wife duo took complete charge to beat Yang Po Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang 21-11, 21-15 in their quarter-final match lasting 28 minutes.

Po Hsuan-Ling Fang, ranked world No 10, made numerous unforced errors, which took the pressure off Soon Huat-Shevon.

The pairs have met six times, with the Malaysians winning all the encounters.

Soon Huat-Shevon will face China’s Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin who defeated their compatriots Guo Xin Wa-Chen Feng Hui in another quarter-final match.

World No 3 pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei joined them in the semi-finals when they beat Thailand’s Oupthong Ruttanapak-Sudjaipraparat Jhenicha 21-16, 21-17 in a match lasting 42 minutes.

The Malaysians lost their concentration briefly after Ee Wei was involved in an argument with the umpire after three service faults in the second game, trailing 6-12 at one point.

However, they fought back with vengeance to win the match in straight games.

The pairs have met three times so far, with Tang Jie-Ee Wei winning all the encounters.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei will face French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue, who defeated Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saitoin, in tomorrow’s semi-final.
