PETALING JAYA:
Various NGOs and student groups will organise a protest against corruption in the heart of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Jan 25.

The secretariat of “Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah” includes representatives from Himpunan Advokasi Rakyat Malaysia (Haram), which was among the organisers of the anti-corruption rally in Kota Kinabalu on New Year’s Eve.

Protesters are expected to gather in front of Sogo shopping mall in KL at 2.30pm before marching along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman towards Dataran Merdeka.

Zaim Zulkifli, secretary of the rally’s secretariat, said the upcoming rally was not backed by any political party but supported by over 50 NGOs and student groups, Sinar Harian reported.

“However, we are open to any political party, whether minor political movements or national political parties, that wants to stand in solidarity with us,” he was quoted as saying.

Zaim said they were holding the rally to express their anger, sadness and disappointments with corruption in Malaysia, accusing both the government and the opposition of failing to uphold integrity.

He said they were also supportive of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s anti-corruption stance.

Haram secretary-general Adam Nor said they will make three key demands at the rally – for the authorities not to compromise with politicians charged with graft, a transparent investigation into corruption allegations in Sabah, and for all parties to work together to eradicate corruption.

The group is said to have notified the police of the rally yesterday.
