Azlan Anwar is accused of attacking Mariani Yaakob, 38, during an argument at her home in the Tri Pinnacle apartments on Nov 15, 2023.
Azlan was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison and a fine, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atikah Asyaraf Ali requested bail of RM10,000 and a court order barring Azlan from contacting the victim or any of the witnesses.
Azlan’s lawyer, Yusuf Idris, urged the court to be lenient by setting a lower bail. He said his client earns a monthly income of RM3,000 and is the sole provider for his wife and two school-aged children.
Yusuf said his client has cooperated with the police and appeared in court as directed. He said bail is only intended to ensure his client’s presence in court and should not be punitive in nature.
“Given the current economy and the situation my client is facing, RM10,000 is a very high request for bail. I hope the court can consider lowering the amount,” he said.
Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin set bail at RM6,000 with one surety and ordered the accused not to contact the victim or her family.
She set Feb 19 as the next mention date.
