PETALING JAYA:
Citing road safety concerns, Pahang’s Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah plans to inspect for himself the roads in several areas in the state, including the accident-prone Kuala Lumpur-Karak highway.

Al-Sultan Abdullah called for improvements to be made to the state’s road infrastructure to reduce the risk of crashes, after 419 fatal accidents were recorded in Pahang last year.

He urged the authorities to install more safety signs and lighting on highways and village roads, especially along sharp bends, Bernama reported.

“I was informed about the lack of lighting in certain areas, such as Karak (highway). I will inspect this myself. This is one of the comments I’ve heard and was requested to highlight.

“In addition to infrastructure, I would like to remind drivers to check the condition of their vehicles. Sometimes, we drive unfit vehicles to travel to a destination. Drive cautiously, especially in rainy or dark conditions. If you are tired, you should rest,” he was quoted as saying.

Yesterday, Pahang police’s traffic investigation and enforcement department said the 419 fatal crashes reported in 2024 were 25 fewer than in the preceding year.

Al-Sultan Abdullah was met by reporters after visiting and handing over aid to 62-year-old Semek Muda at Kampung Sepauk in Pekan, Pahang, today.

Semek had lost her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren in a fatal accident at Km65 of Jalan Pekan-Nenasi-Rompin last Saturday.

The Proton Wira the victims were travelling in had crashed head on with a Nissan Grand Livina MPV, killing all five. Two people in the Grand Livina sustained injuries.
