PETALING JAYA:
The national bowling team made history by winning the men’s team event at the IBF (International Bowling Federation) World Cup in Kowloon, Hong Kong, today.

The victory came after Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, Timmy Tan, Rafiq Ismail and Ahmad Muaz Fishol defeated Puerto Rico 3-2 in the final.

Berita Harian reported that the national team won the first game 203-170 before Puerto Rico claimed the second game 257-216.

Malaysia regained the lead with a 197-180 victory in the third game, only for Puerto Rico – who defeated the United States to reach the final – to win the fourth game 222-185.

Returning to the right lane, the Malaysians took the deciding game 227-161.

This is Malaysia’s first-ever victory in the men’s team event at the IBF World Cup. They had defeated Kuwait in the semi-finals.

Syafiq Ridhwan Malik won the men’s singles competition at the World Cup during the 2012 edition in Poland.

Today’s success comes after Natasha Roslan was crowned champion in the women’s singles event at the IBF World Cup last week. She beat Germany’s Birgit Noreiks 217-166, 226-169 in the final.

Natasha, who also won the gold medal at the 2023 World Tenpin Bowling Championship, ended Malaysia’s 53-year wait for a women’s singles title at the World Cup.

The tournament made its debut in 1972.
