Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the couple’s marriage certificate had been verified by the authorities of the country where they had tied the knot last September, Berita Harian reported.
He said the couple, who were in a relationship, wanted to marry but had faced obstacles here.
“When this issue surfaced, even their friends were unaware of the marriage. They didn’t want to make it public for fear of upsetting their families,” he was quoted as saying.
Razarudin previously said that investigations into a criminal intimidation case involving a minister’s son, which had gone viral on social media, had been completed.
The incident was reportedly detailed in a police report shared on a Telegram channel. It alleged that the minister’s son had threatened a pregnant woman.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the minister’s son is married to the woman in question.
Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said he would leave the matter to the authorities for a thorough investigation, stressing that all Malaysians, including his son, were not above the law.
