2 killed after speedboat rams boat carrying tourists near Semporna

Two foreign men were killed when their speedboat collided with a boat carrying 12 tourists in the waters of Balimbang near Semporna, Sabah, at 9.45am yesterday.

Semporna police chief Sabri Zainol said the men, both foreigners, were aged 45 and 50, Bernama reported.

They were thrown overboard after the speedboat collided with the boat carrying the tourists heading to Pulau Mabul.

“Search and rescue efforts were conducted by civilians and they found both victims underwater, dead.

“Their bodies were taken to Semporna Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

“An investigation paper has been opened under Section 304A of the Penal Code (for causing death through negligence),” he said in a statement today.

Sabri said the victims were the driver and passenger of the speedboat, which was badly damaged in the collision.

He urged those who witnessed the incident to contact investigating officer Hafizudin Akram Gafar Ismail at 013-7557293 or the nearest police station.

Sabri also advised all boat owners to be cautious especially in busy areas, prepare safety equipment such as life jackets and turn on the lights at night.
