PETALING JAYA:
National mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who had been having a superb run at the Malaysia Open, were ousted in the semi-final of the Malaysia Open by China’s world No 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping.

A spirited display by the world No 5 Malaysian pair was not good enough to stop the attacking Chinese pair from winning 21-19, 21-14 in a match lasting 50 minutes.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei went down to their fifth loss against the Chinese pair in seven encounters so far. When they last met, the Malaysian pair shocked Yan Zhe-Dong Ping at the Paris Olympics last year.

Their defeat tonight was the second disappointment of the day for Malaysian fans, who had to endure an earlier loss by home pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, who were defeated by a Thai pair in the other semi-final at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Despite the losses, all pairs entering the semi-final will take home US$20,300 (RM91,314) each.

The Chinese pair will play Thailand’s world No 47 pair of Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran who had defeated Soon Huat-Shevon in three games earlier.
