National men’s doubles shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi became the second Malaysian pair to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open after a hard-fought victory over their South Korean rivals.

In a match that lasted 68 minutes, the world No 24 pair defeated Kang Min Nyuk-Jin Yong 23-21, 16-21, 21-18 to send the Malaysian fans into a frenzy at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil this afternoon.

This is Min Nyuk-Jin Yong’s first time partnering each other in an international tournament.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi had created a major upset in the first round of the Super 1000 tournament when they came from behind to beat Indonesia’s world No 4 pair Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto in three games.

A tough time awaits Yew Sin-Ee Yi in the quarter-final as they will be up against world No 9 Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty who defeated Malaysian pair Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 21-15, 21-15 in the second round today.

Earlier, national mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei powered their way into the quarter-finals with an easy 21-8, 21-14 win over Taiwan’s Lu Ming Che-Hung En Tzu.
