Justice Jamil Hussin sentenced Suhaina Sarwan, 46, to three years in prison for each charge but ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of her arrest, May 30 last year.
On the first count, she was charged with possessing articles related to IS and acts of terrorism in a laptop at Jalan Baiduri, Taman Daiman Jaya in Johor on May 30, Berita Harian reported.
She was also charged with possessing five books related to IS and acts of terrorism at Block 9, Felda Lok Heng Barat, Johor, on May 30.
The charge was framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which is punishable by up to seven years in prison or a fine upon conviction.
Earlier, lawyer Sazlinidayu Kamarul Baharin sought a lighter sentence for Suhaina since she had pleaded guilty.
Sazlinidayu also pointed out that her client used to earn a mere RM2,200 a month, was married with two children and also had to care for her elderly father.
She also said Suhaina had already been sentenced to two years in jail for the same offence in a separate case in the High Court.
Deputy public prosecutor Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim sought a heavier sentence, saying public interest was more important than the convict’s personal interests.
He said experts had found that those in possession of materials related to the IS had inclinations towards extreme beliefs and actions, which could threaten national security.
