PETALING JAYA:
Two Malaysian pairs qualified for the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open badminton championship almost simultaneously with superb wins in their last 16 games this evening.

After a poor showing from Malaysian shuttlers on the first and second days, fans were visibly overjoyed when world No 14 men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun whipped Taiwan’s Lee Jhe Huei-Yang Po Hsuan.

The Malaysian pair took 31 minutes to defeat their opponents, who are ranked higher at world No 10 in the BWF world rankings, 21-15, 21-13.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun can expect to have a tough time in their quarter-final match against French brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov who seem to be playing with much determination in this championship.

Minutes after their victory, mixed doubles shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai delivered another easy win, defeating India’s Sathish Karunakaran-Aadya Variyath 21-10, 21- 17.

Although the world No 34 Indians lost easily in the first game, they came back strongly in the second and even took a 16-14 lead. However, the more experienced world No 6 pair took the match in 31 minutes.

Soon Huat-Shevon will take on world No 11 Chinese pair Cheng Xing-Zheng Chi whom they have beaten only once in their three encounters.

This was during their last meeting at the China Open in September last year when they won 21-18, 21-18 in the semi-final.

Earlier, men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei powered their way into the quarter-finals, which will be played tomorrow.
