PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken the statement of a PAS assemblyman in Selangor over a fake Facebook posting involving Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

It is understood that the posting in question claimed that Anwar, the PKR president, had stated his support for party member Iswardy Morni following his conviction of sedition for insulting the king.

MCMC said postings on the matter were largely made by fake accounts but one report had been lodged over a similar posting made by Sungai Burong assemblyman Zamri Zainuldin.

“The commission recorded the assemblyman’s statement on Jan 7 to assist in police investigations.

“A smartphone and SIM card were handed over as evidence to assist in the investigations. A forensic analysis will be conducted on the device.

“The case is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (for improper use of network facilities), punishable by a maximum RM50,000 fine, one year in jail or both, upon conviction,” it said in a statement.

MCMC urged the public to exercise prudence when uploading social media postings and to ensure the information contained was legitimate.
