PAS’s ‘political fatwas’ ever-changing, Mat Sabu says on Najib rally

The Amanah president cautions against being 'misled' by PAS, saying the Islamic party will ditch Najib Razak once he is no longer of benefit.

PETALING JAYA:
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu has ridiculed PAS’s show of support for former prime minister Najib Razak, describing it as one of the Islamic party’s flip-flopping “political fatwas”.

Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, said PAS had changed its stance on several occasions to suit its political needs, noting that it worked with DAP in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition before labelling the party anti-Islam after parting ways.

In a Facebook post, he said PAS once called Umno an enemy of Islam as well, but later worked with the party under the now-defunct Muafakat Nasional alliance.

“PAS used to say that praying behind a pro-Umno imam was not allowed, but now it calls Umno a blessing. Their rulings change to match their goals.

“PAS leaders have supported both DAP and MCA candidates, justifying their actions with religious arguments that fit their needs.

“We can conclude that every accusation and perception PAS has tried to play up is merely a political act. Their political fatwas can change any time as they please,” said Mohamad, who was with PAS for 37 years before leaving to form Amanah.

Mohamad added that PAS could abandon Najib if he became politically irrelevant and no longer benefitted the party.

PAS held a rally outside the Palace of Justice in solidarity with Najib on Monday, ahead of a court decision related to the house arrest addendum. The rally was also attended by several Bersatu leaders, including opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin.

Some had questioned PAS and Bersatu’s intentions, with Umno leader Ghulam Muzaffar Gulam Mustakim saying the two parties did not really care about Najib.

Mohamad said Muslims should reject PAS’s tactics as Islam should bring peace and justice, not division.

“Let’s defend the oppressed and say no to hateful politics. Don’t be deceived and swayed by PAS’s latest theatrics,” he added.
