PUTRAJAYA:
The Malaysian Bar claims it has been sidelined in the national legislative process, with several important laws passed without any consultation with the body.

Its president Ezri Abdul Wahab said this was despite the Bar having over 24,000 members with legal expertise.

“Logic dictates we are uniquely positioned to assist in shaping and advising on laws that serve society.

“Yet, we see efforts to marginalise us, either by dismissing our input or consulting us without genuine regard for our views.

“Even worse, some significant laws are being passed without any consultation with us,” he said in his speech at the Bar’s legal year opening ceremony today.

Ezri also addressed accusations that the Bar Council was political, as some had claimed their statements lacked neutrality and either opposed or supported the government of the day.

Saying the reality was far more nuanced, he added that the Bar remained “steadfast in its mission, not for politics, but for the people”.

“Our role is not just to interpret the law but to advocate laws that are just, inclusive and reflective of societal needs.

“Ignoring our voice is a disservice to the very people whom the laws are meant to protect,” he said.
