Na’im said any action that contradicts the Federal Constitution and the country’s laws must be stopped as it can cause public unrest, especially among the Muslim community.
“Referring to news about a viral video of several individuals attempting to spread Christianity in front of a supermarket in Desa Setapak, we urge all parties to respect and adhere to the Federal Constitution in order to maintain harmony in the country,” he said in a statement today.
“All parties are urged to remain calm and trust the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
“Any party found to have committed acts that are contrary to the Federal Constitution and (other) laws must be brought to court.”
While Article 11(1) of the Federal Constitution states that every person has the right to profess and practise their religion, Article 11(4) of the Federal Constitution bars propagation of other religions to Muslims.
Earlier today, police said they were looking for three persons alleged to have distributed leaflets on Christianity publicly in front of a supermarket in Desa Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, as seen in a video.
In the viral video, a man recording the incident can be heard confronting two Caucasian men dressed in white shirts and ties telling them their actions were illegal.
“This is wrong. Totally wrong. This is not allowed in Malaysia,” he said.
Wangsa Maju police chief Lazim Ismail confirmed that a report was filed on Monday after the incident was captured in the video.
In a statement, he said the case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony on religious grounds.
